How to know it's the MacBook logic board
Logic board faults are electrical — won't turn on, won't charge, boot loop, GPU artifacts, or kernel panics. These six patterns all point at the board rather than the battery, screen, SSD, or RAM.
Won't turn on — no fan spin, no chime, LED on charger doesn't light
Power management IC failure, or liquid damage to the power rail. If plugging in the charger does nothing (no LED on the MagSafe/USB-C brick, no fan spin), the logic board isn't getting power. SMC reset first; if that fails, it's board-level.
Won't charge — battery drains, charger LED is orange/green but percentage stays at 0%
USB-C charging IC failure (2016+ MacBooks), or MagSafe charging IC failure (2015 and earlier). The charger works, but the power management chip isn't routing current to the battery. This is an IC-level fault, not a battery or charger fault.
Boot loop — Apple logo appears, progress bar stalls, restarts
SMC or T2 chip firmware corruption (2018+ MacBooks), or RAM failure. If Internet Recovery also fails, it's a logic board fault. Reinstalling macOS won't fix it — the board needs diagnosis.
GPU artifacts — screen glitches, colored lines, system freeze
Dedicated GPU failure (2011–2012 MacBook Pro 15/17, 2016–2019 MacBook Pro 15/16). Apple had a free replacement programme for 2011 models; if that window closed, we can reflow or reball the GPU. M-series MacBooks don't have this issue (unified GPU on the SoC).
Kernel panic on boot — 'You need to restart your computer' screen
RAM failure, or CPU/logic board fault. If the panic happens even in Safe Mode or Internet Recovery, it's board-level. Often paired with liquid damage (corrosion on RAM traces) or impact damage.
Liquid damage — MacBook was exposed to water, coffee, or other liquids
Liquid damage is repairable if caught early (within 48–72 hours). Ultrasonic clean + isopropyl alcohol, then board-level diagnosis (which ICs corroded, which traces shorted). The longer you wait, the more the corrosion spreads. If it won't turn on after liquid exposure, don't try to power it on — send it for diagnosis immediately.

4Micro-soldering + component swap
For charging IC failures: IC desoldered, new IC soldered, charging tested. For liquid damage: ultrasonic clean, corroded ICs replaced, trace repair. For GPU failures: reflow (2011–2012 models) or reball (2016–2019 dGPU models). For SMC failures: firmware reset or SMC chip replaced. CPU, RAM, T2 chip preserved when possible — only the failed component changes.
5Test, verify, return
Power-on test, charge test, boot test (macOS + Internet Recovery), stress test (Prime95 for CPU, Heaven Benchmark for GPU). If the fault was liquid damage, we run a 24-hour burn-in test to catch latent corrosion. 1-year warranty paperwork. Return courier or walk-out.

It's how Apple repairs at scale (board swap is faster than IC-level diagnosis and guaranteed to work), but it's not cost-effective for out-of-warranty MacBooks. Independent specialists like iTweak do component-level repair: micro-soldering, liquid damage recovery, GPU reflow, charging IC swap. 1-year warranty. Most MacBook owners outside Apple coverage choose the independent route.
Every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro — Intel-era (2008–2020) and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4). The hardware differs across generations (dedicated GPU on 2011–2012 and 2016–2019 Pro models, T2 chip on 2018–2020, Apple Silicon unified architecture), but we have the micro-soldering equipment and experience for all of them. If the SSD is intact (not corroded), yes — data recovery is possible even if the MacBook won't boot. We remove the SSD, read it on a bench reader, clone it to an external drive. This is separate from the logic board repair (data recovery is quoted separately), but we can do both. If the SSD is corroded or encrypted (FileVault without recovery key), data recovery is much harder.
Yes — if the logic board develops any functional issue within the 1-year warranty (won't turn on, won't charge, boot loop, GPU artifacts), we re-repair or replace the failed IC free of charge. The warranty doesn't cover physical damage or liquid damage after the repair.

Logic board repair is a non-data-affecting repair — the SSD is separate from the logic board (except on 2013–2015 MacBook Air / Pro where the SSD is soldered; on those models, data loss is possible if the board is severely corroded). We recommend a Time Machine backup as a precaution before any device repair. For liquid damage, send the MacBook immediately (don't try to power it on) — the sooner we clean it, the less data is at risk.
If your MacBook is still under Apple's standard 1-year warranty or AppleCare+, a third-party logic board repair (including ours) voids it for hardware claims. We recommend AASP for in-warranty MacBooks. For out-of-warranty MacBooks, our component-level repair + 1-year iTweak warranty is the value choice. Note: liquid damage voids Apple warranty regardless, so independent repair is your only option.
