How to know it's the MacBook keyboard
Keyboard faults are mechanical or liquid-based — stuck keys, double-typing, unresponsive keys, or sticky residue. These six patterns all point at the keyboard rather than the software, cable, or logic board.
Keys repeating or double-typing — especially butterfly keyboards
2015–2019 MacBook keyboards (butterfly mechanism) had a design flaw — dust under the key causes repeat-typing or missed keystrokes. Apple had a free repair programme; if that window closed, we can clean or replace the mechanism.
One or more keys not responding — press hard and they work
Butterfly keyboard contact failure, or scissor-mechanism dome collapse. If pressing harder makes it register, the key mechanism is worn. We replace the individual key rather than the entire keyboard when possible.
Sticky keys, crunchy feel, or liquid residue visible
Spill damage — coffee, water, soda. The liquid corrodes the key contacts and makes them stick. If caught early (within 48 hours), an ultrasonic clean saves the keyboard. If the logic board is also affected, it's a more complex repair.
Keyboard backlight not working — some keys lit, others dark
Backlight LED failure, or backlight flex cable loose. If the keyboard types fine but the backlight is patchy, it's a backlight-only fault (cheaper than full keyboard swap).
Entire keyboard unresponsive — external keyboard works
Keyboard flex cable loose or damaged, or keyboard connector on logic board damaged. If an external USB/Bluetooth keyboard works but the internal one doesn't, it's either cable or connector — both repairable without full top-case swap.
Shift / Command / Control keys not working — typing is fine
Modifier key failure — common on 2016–2019 MacBook Pro after heavy use. The key mechanism wears out, but the key cap is often intact. We replace the mechanism, not the entire keyboard.

Apple ships the keyboard riveted to the top case — the chassis that also holds the battery and trackpad. AASPs are required to replace the entire top case assembly rather than the keyboard alone, which is the engineering-correct approach for an authorised repair but doubles the cost. Independent specialists like iTweak do component-level repair: individual key swap when possible, spill damage cleanup, or full keyboard swap only when necessary. 1-year warranty. Most MacBook owners outside Apple coverage choose the independent route.
Every MacBook Air and MacBook Pro — Intel-era (2008–2020) and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4). If your MacBook is still under Apple's standard 1-year warranty or AppleCare+, a third-party keyboard replacement (including ours) voids it for hardware claims. We recommend AASP for in-warranty MacBooks. For out-of-warranty MacBooks (or if the Apple butterfly keyboard repair programme expired), our component-level repair + 1-year iTweak warranty is the value choice.
