If you’re having trouble with your MacBook trackpad, there are a few things you can try to get it up and running again. This guide will show you how to troubleshoot and repair a variety of common trackpad issues.
First, make sure that the trackpad is clean and free of any debris. If there is anything blocking the trackpad, such as dirt or grease, it may prevent it from working properly. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently clean the trackpad.
If the trackpad is still not working after you’ve cleaned it, you may need to reset the trackpad settings. To do this, go to the System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad. Make sure “Tap to click” is deselected. In the “Scroll & Zoom” header, make sure “Scroll direction: Natural” is selected. These two preferences should reset your trackpad to its original configuration.
If your MacBook trackpad is still not working after you’ve cleaned it, try resetting the PRAM. To do this, turn off your computer and unplug the power cord. Then, press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys on your keyboard and turn on your computer. Continue holding the keys until you hear the startup sound for a second time. This will reset the PRAM and may fix the issue with your trackpad.
If resetting the PRAM doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to reset the SMC. The SMC (System Management Controller) is responsible for a variety of low-level functions on your MacBook, including the trackpad. To reset the SMC, turn off your computer and unplug the power cord. Then, press and hold the Shift + Control + Option keys on your keyboard and turn on your computer. Release the keys when you see the startup sound. This will reset the SMC and may fix the issue with your trackpad.
If neither of these solutions works, you may need to replace the trackpad or the trackpad cable depending on the diagnosis. There is no need to replace the full top case assembly which includes the keyboard.Once you replace a new trackpad or the trackpad cable, restart your MacBook and the issue should be resolved.
