How to know it's the MacBook trackpad
Trackpad faults are mechanical or sensor-based — no click, unresponsive cursor, trackpad lifted off the chassis, or phantom touches. These six patterns all point at the trackpad rather than the software, cable, or logic board.
Trackpad won't click — physically or virtually
Force Touch trackpads (2015+) simulate a click via the Taptic Engine. If it won't click at all, the Taptic Engine has failed or the trackpad flex cable is loose. Pre-2015 mechanical trackpads have a physical button underneath — if that won't click, the mechanism is stuck (often from a swollen battery pushing the trackpad up).
Trackpad physically lifted off the chassis — can't click down
Swollen battery underneath has lifted the trackpad off its mounting. STOP USING the MacBook — bulging batteries can puncture and ignite. The battery needs replacement first, then the trackpad mechanism inspected. Often the trackpad is undamaged, just displaced.
Cursor moves, but trackpad won't register taps or gestures
Force Touch sensor failure. The capacitive layer works (cursor movement), but the pressure sensor doesn't (tap-to-click, Force Touch, gestures). This is a sensor-only fault — the trackpad surface is usually intact.
Trackpad unresponsive — cursor doesn't move, external mouse works
Trackpad flex cable loose or damaged, or trackpad connector on logic board damaged. If an external USB/Bluetooth mouse works but the trackpad doesn't, it's either cable or connector — both repairable without full top-case swap.
Trackpad registers phantom clicks or movements — not touching it
Capacitive layer or Force Touch sensor fault. Often paired with moisture or residue under the trackpad (spill damage). An ultrasonic clean sometimes resolves it; if not, the sensor needs replacement.
Trackpad click feels mushy or inconsistent — works, but wrong feedback
Taptic Engine partial failure (2015+). The click works, but the haptic feedback is weak or delayed. This is a Taptic Engine-only fault — the trackpad surface and sensor are usually intact.
