When you need a microphone repair
Your iPhone has three microphones — bottom (used in calls), front (used in video calls and selfie video), and rear (used in standard video recording). They fail independently. Six signs and which mic to blame.
Callers can't hear you in a regular call
Bottom microphone failed (the one next to the charging port). The most commonly damaged mic — sits in the path of pocket lint, water, and drop impact.
Caller can't hear you on speakerphone
Same bottom mic — speakerphone uses the same input. If they can hear you on regular calls but not speaker mode, it's a software audio-routing issue, not a mic fault.
Voice memos record silence or static
Bottom microphone again — Voice Memos defaults to the bottom mic. If voice memos work but calls don't, the issue is the audio IC on the logic board, not the mic itself.
Video recordings have no audio
Rear microphone (next to the rear camera) failed. Standard rear-camera video uses this mic — selfie video uses the front mic.
Selfie videos have no audio
Front microphone (near the earpiece) failed. Independent from the bottom mic. Common after a clumsy DIY screen repair.
Siri can't hear you / FaceTime audio breaks up
Multiple mics are involved here — Siri uses adaptive beamforming across all three. If one fails, Siri degrades but doesn't break entirely. We diagnose which mic is at fault.
Mic distorts at higher volumes
Bottom mic has water damage or its mesh is clogged. Quiet voices come through clean; raised voices distort because the cone has been damaged.

How the repair works
Five steps. The diagnostic step is the most important — without it, the wrong mic gets replaced and the issue persists.
1Diagnostic and free mic clean
Phonecheck tests each mic individually — bottom, front, rear. Lint or dust in the mic port is fixed with a free clean (about 1 in 6 cases). Otherwise we know exactly which component needs swapping.
2Open the device
Heated mat softens the factory adhesive. Screen lifted with a suction cup. Logic board never powered during the swap.
3Disconnect the affected mic flex
Bottom mic = part of the charging port flex assembly. Front mic = on the earpiece flex. Rear mic = on the camera assembly. We separate carefully to preserve the surrounding components.
4Install the new mic assembly
Apple-spec flex seated, connector clipped firmly. If the bottom mic is being replaced, we test the charging port at the same time — they share the flex, so a single test confirms both are functional.
5Test and reseal
Test call placed (bottom mic), selfie video recorded (front mic), rear-camera video recorded (rear mic). Siri tested for beamforming. Full Phonecheck pass before return.

Most likely the bottom microphone (next to the charging port). Try this first: clean the port with a soft brush — lint accumulation is a common cause. If voice memos also record silence, it's the bottom mic. If voice memos work fine but calls don't, the issue is software (try toggling Bluetooth off and rebooting).
Two likely causes: lint or dust in the mic port (free clean usually fixes it), or water exposure has damaged the mic cone and mesh. Drop damage can also pinch the mic flex inside the chassis. We diagnose under microscope before quoting.
