When you need an ear speaker repair
The ear speaker is the slim slot at the top of the screen — it's what you hold to your ear during phone calls. Distinct from the loudspeaker. Six signs it's failing.
Callers sound very low even at max volume
You can hear them, but only just — even with volume cranked. Usually dust or earwax in the speaker mesh, or a degraded coil. Free clean often fixes the dust case.
Voice on calls sounds muffled or distorted
Like the caller is underwater, or their voice keeps breaking up. The ear-speaker cone has been damaged — usually by water exposure or a drop.
Completely silent during calls
Calls connect, the other person hears you fine, but you hear nothing. Earpiece is dead — and since the front camera and proximity sensor share its flex, sometimes those go too.
Speaker only works on speakerphone
If switching to speakerphone restores audio but the earpiece is silent, the ear-speaker is the failed component (not the cellular or the loudspeaker).
Audio cuts out when held to your ear
Proximity sensor (which sits next to the ear-speaker on its flex cable) may be triggering. If you hear callers fine until you put the phone to your ear, the proximity sensor or its connection has failed.
Issues after a screen replacement elsewhere
The ear-speaker's flex routes through the screen assembly. A previous (non-iTweak) screen swap often damages or dislodges this flex. We open, inspect, and reseat or replace.

How the repair works
Five steps. The earpiece swap is straightforward — the careful work is handling the Face ID and proximity-sensor flex cables.
1Diagnostic and free earpiece clean
Phonecheck confirms the issue is the earpiece. We inspect the speaker slot for earwax, lint, or dust — about 1 in 5 cases are resolved by a free clean, no replacement needed.
2Open the device
Heated mat softens the factory adhesive. Screen lifted with a suction cup. Logic board never powered during the swap.
3Disconnect the earpiece assembly
The earpiece sits at the top edge of the screen, sharing a flex cable with the front camera, ambient light sensor, and Face ID dot projector. We separate carefully — this is where cheap shops break Face ID.
4Install the new earpiece
Apple-spec earpiece seated. Face ID, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and front camera transferred to the new flex carefully. All connectors clipped firmly.
5Test and reseal
