Phone won't charge: how to tell if it's the port, the cable, or the battery

Eliminate the cheap causes first
Most 'not charging' calls turn out to be a bad cable or a pocket-lint-packed port — both quick and cheap to rule out. Do these before anything else:
- Try a different cable AND a different adapter (cables fail far more often than phones)
- Try a different wall socket, and avoid charging from a weak laptop/USB port
- Shine a light into the charging port — lint and pocket fluff are the #1 hidden cause
- Gently clean the port with a wooden/plastic toothpick or a soft brush (never metal)
- If your phone supports wireless charging, test that — if wireless works but cable doesn't, suspect the port
Is it the charging port?
The port takes a beating from daily plugging and is a common wear item. These signs point at it:
- It only charges if you hold the cable at a certain angle or press it in
- The cable feels loose or wobbly in the port
- Charging stops and starts when you move the phone
- There's visible damage, bent pins, or corrosion (often after water exposure)
Is it the battery?
If the connection is solid but the phone still misbehaves around power, the battery is the usual suspect — especially on a phone more than two years old.
- It charges to a point then dies, or the percentage jumps around
- It drains unusually fast or shuts down with charge still showing
- The back or screen is bulging — a swollen battery (stop using it and get it replaced now)
- Battery health is reported below 80% (iPhone: Settings › Battery › Battery Health)
Quick decision table
Match your symptom to the most likely cause:
| What you're seeing | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Works with a different cable | Cable / adapter | Replace the cable |
| Only charges at an angle / wobbly | Charging port | Port cleaning or replacement |
| Charges fine but drains fast / shuts down | Battery | Battery replacement |
| Back or screen bulging | Swollen battery | Stop using — replace immediately |
| Dead after water or a drop | Port or board | Lab diagnosis |
