How to know it's the battery
Apple Watch batteries are paper-thin and die in distinct ways. These six signs all point at the cell rather than the OLED or the charging coil.
Drops below 50% by lunchtime
A healthy Apple Watch goes 18+ hours on a charge. Mid-day drain to single digits means the cell has lost capacity.
Random shutdowns above 30%
Aged battery can't deliver peak voltage; the watch shuts off even though the gauge says it has charge.
Series 3 specifically — screen lifted off the case
Series 3 has a notorious swollen-battery problem. The battery expands and physically pushes the OLED off the chassis. Stop using the watch — pressure can crack the OLED.
Won't charge past 80% or charge falls quickly
Voltage collapse near full charge is a textbook end-of-life symptom. The cell can't hold a full charge.
Charging coil aligned but no charge accepted
If the watch shows no charging indicator at all, the issue could be the battery's protection circuit, not the coil. Diagnostic first.
Warm at idle, not just when active
Internal resistance has risen. The cell dissipates energy as heat even when the watch is locked.
