Specifications of the iPhone 14 Camera: Photos and Videos for Greater Texture and Attention to Detail
“Last year, over 3 trillion photos were taken with the Apple iPhone, capturing life’s memories and moments. Apple has developed unique state-of-the-art camera technology while staying true to the craft of photography.” - Caron Thor, Senior Manager, Camera Image Quality.

Specifications of the iPhone 14 Camera: Greater Texture and Attention to Detail

The Apple iPhone 14 sports a 12 MP main camera with a larger sensor and a larger pixel at 1.9 microns.

The Apple iPhone 14 sports a 12 MP main camera with a larger sensor and a larger pixel at 1.9 microns. It has a faster f/1.5 aperture and sensor shift OIS, a powerful upgrade. “The Apple iPhone 14 takes stunning shots everywhere!” Caron Thor, Senior Manager, Camera Image Quality.

Faster apertures allow for better motion freezing, enabling vibrant colours to come to life in the scene. The Ultra Wide camera provides innovative perspectives and allows for wider shots.

‍True Depth Camera

TrueDepth Camera on iPhone 14 features a faster aperture of f/1.9, which provides 38% better low light performance. FaceTime uses the front camera for sharp images and high-quality video. For the first time, the camera features autofocus, which allows users to focus images from multiple angles and distances.

Together with TrueDepth Capabilities, it has a hybrid system that can focus faster, even in low light.

‍Camera Lighting Environments: Apple iPhone 14 Series

You want to be able to take pictures in all different kinds of lighting, from bright sunlight to low light or indoor scenes. The iPhone 14 can handle all kinds of lighting. With a 49% improvement in low light capture compared to its previous release, this camera allows for richer colours in difficult lighting conditions. It also allows for twice as fast night mode exposure.

Light-deprived environments

By capturing low light images, Apple makes a significant leap forward in low light camera performance. “Low light environments can be a unique challenge for photography. Apple has made great progress over the years to create better outcomes with increasingly larger sensors, faster apertures, more advanced lenses; all paired with intelligent software and the powerful Apple Silicon technology that results in incredible capabilities for low light.” Caron Thor, Senior Manager, Camera Image Quality.

The Deep Fusion feature of Apple's iPhone 14 uses the powerful Neural Engine to combine multiple images into a single image. The Deep Fusion feature preserves even the subtlest textures in mid-to-low light.

Uncompressed images retain more detail and information when Deep Fusion is applied earlier in the pipeline. Boosts colour rendering.

‍Photonic Engine: Capture the moment as you live it

It reaches beyond the capabilities of the hardware alone to enhance low-light photos on the iPhone 14. The most impressive part is that it enhances every camera. In comparison with the iPhone 13, the front camera can improve low-light photography by approximately 2x, the Ultra Wide camera by approximately 2x, and the new main camera by approximately 2.5x.

‍The Action Mode

‍“There is a great improvement in video this year. Apple iPhone 14 leads the industry with the best quality video and has great stabilisation. It now has an advanced stabilisation mode - a powerful mode to capture moments on the move.” Caron Thor, Senior Manager, Camera Image Quality.

The Action Mode uses the full sensor with more overscan and advanced roll correction to make videos look incredibly stable. The best part is not having to carry extra gear or gimbal. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR.

The Cinematic Mode has been upgraded too — it can now record at 4K and you have a choice between 24 FPS and 30 FPS (it's locked to 1080p at 30 FPS on iPhone 13). Also, editing Cinematic Mode videos in post allows you to refocus and blend 24 FPS and 30 FPS videos in the same project, but still get the same output (presumably 24 FPS).

Coming in November 2022, iOS 16 will include emergency SOS via satellite.
